As ‘The Tagore Ambassadors’ Rohini and Debashish decided to spend the 150th Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore at Dartington, a place still reverberating with the ideals of the activist-poet! We were fortunate to be invited to the week-long Tagore Festival at Dartington in Devon, England where Rabindranath stayed in the 1920s. There they presented a programme with William Radice entitled “How Magically You Sing”. This was a unique venture to introduce Tagore’s music to the mainstream British audience. William was in a conversation with Rohini and Debashish about the different aspects of Tagore’s music interspersed with songs sung by us without any musical accompaniment. Debashish Raychaudhuri(b.1959), singer, director of several TV Documentaries and professor of English, had joined Doordarshan as a Presentation Announcer in 1977 and worked as a Producer between 1982 and 1985.
He has performed and taught songs of Rabindranath and other genres of Bengali music in India and England. He has also researched on the ?baijis? of India and recreated songs of yesteryears in his CD Bangla Gaaner Sekaal. He has a number of CDs in the genre of Rabindrasangeet. Recently he has teamed up with his daughter Rohini, another very talented vocalist, as the only ?father-daughter duo in the world of Rabindrasangeet?.
Many of his documentary films have received national and international awards. He is also the recipient of the prestigious ?SAMATAT? award for his contribution in the field of music and culture.
As a cultural historian he has lectured in many universities in India and abroad.
He heads the drama wing of Dakshinee and has directed many plays of Tagore for stage and television.
Recently he worked on operas with William Radice, Bernard Hughes in England and also teamed up with Italian and French artistes to direct Verdi?s Italian opera La Traviata in Kolkata.
His most recent work The Dust and the Sunlight is an international release of audio CDs and book based on Rabindranath Tagore?s Gitanjali. Aimed at the non Bengali audience it contains original songs of Gitanjali, recitations in English by William Radice and Louise Coigley and English, French and German translations of the songs.
Born in a musical family, Rohini has the distinction of having late poet and composer Jyotirindra Moitra as her maternal grandfather. She has proved herself to be a promising vocalist at an early age of only 18. She stood first in her Diploma in Rabindrasangeet from the premier Rabindrasangeet institution Dakshinee. She has already cut a niche for herself in several Rabindrasangeet recitals. She is regularly featured in several television channels. She was the most popular star in Tara Muzik?s Tarar Sera Rabi-Kirane. Her series of solo programmes telecast from Tara became instant hit amongst the listeners of Rabindrasangeet.
She also has a flair for singing other genres of music than Tagore?s. She is presently trained in Classical music by Smt. Suranjana Basu. She has taken special training in Rabindrasangeet under Sri Rano Guhathakurta and her father, Debashish Raychaudhuri.
Rohini has already performed with Pundit Buddhadeb Dasgupta on stage and television. She had also earned laurels for her playback in several Bengali tele-films.
Under her father Debashish Raychaudhuri?s guidance she has recently participated in an Italian Opera along with artistes from Italy and France
She has also performed in Bangladesh and Japan.

The Dust and the Sunlight: Rohini is the youngest contributor in this truly international venture on Tagore?s Gitanjali.
